Give every subject its own identity and keep authentic identifiers linked.
Begin with what exists. Keep what it becomes.
Most buildings and assets were never born with complete digital records. Start with the facts someone can support now, let each record deepen through care and change, and keep its place, source and uncertainty attached. That is how a material past becomes a usable future.
A building is not one giant passport.
One property contains places, spaces, systems, equipment, components, products and material batches. Each is a different subject. Each can be known at a different depth. The building logbook connects their records; it does not flatten them into one object.
Useful knowledge can grow without turning unknowns into invented certainty.
Different views can coexist over the same sourced facts.
One ordinary day can deepen several records.
Rain meets a timber window. A technician cleans, inspects and reseals it. Water, cleaner and sealant are not one product, and maintenance is not second life. Yet the same questions follow every hand-off: what thing, where, when, who acted, under whose authority, what input was used, and what changed?
Rain reaches W-14.
Physical The south-façade opening meets one wet day.
Digital The record relates the window to its façade, room and inspection area.
Locates recorded facts · does not simulate waterCondition becomes observable.
Physical A moisture reading and photograph are taken.
Digital Source, time, method and uncertainty attach to the installed asset.
Observation · not an automated decisionThe window is cleaned and resealed.
Physical A technician performs the recorded work.
Digital Authority, cleaner and sealant batch stay distinct and link as inputs.
CPR-facing product · separate input recordsThe changed condition returns as evidence.
Physical A post-work reading records what was left behind.
Digital One event joins the building logbook and the window's continuing account.
Maintenance event · sourced resultThe account leaves with the window.
Physical It is deinstalled and considered by another project.
Digital Location and custody change; maintenance evidence remains inspectable.
Second life · the account continuesWater supplies operational context; it is not presented here as a product passport. Construction products and detergents remain subject to their own instruments, responsible actors and data requirements even when both participate in the same maintenance event.
Matter · memory · possibility Keep context from disappearing with time.
Materials weather. Documents separate from the things they describe. Work loses attribution. A record cannot stop physical entropy, but it can keep context from disappearing at the same speed. Each sourced relationship between a thing, its place, the work and the people involved preserves something the next person can build upon.
Stable, sourced facts let a caretaker, architect, recycler and regulator examine different possibilities while the underlying record retains its own history.

Give what already exists a beginning.
Most things in use today were never born with a passport. A recovered wall panel may have only a photograph and a location. A legacy battery may have a serial number but no reliable composition record. That is enough to begin an asset register.
Start with exactly what someone can support today. Add condition, custody, maintenance, movement and source evidence as they arrive. Unknown stays unknown; the record becomes more useful without pretending to be complete.

A useful record can precede the applicable passport.
The recast Construction Products Regulation establishes a construction Digital Product Passport system and requires it to remain interoperable with the ESPR passport system and with building-information modelling. An existing-asset record can preserve useful facts before every regulatory field is known; it becomes neither a conformity claim nor a DPP merely by growing deeper.
-
BEGIN
Record the useful minimum
Identify a new, existing or reclaimed thing and preserve the facts, source and unknowns available now.
-
DEEPEN
Connect evidence through time
Keep place, condition, work, custody and authentic identifiers linked as the asset changes.
-
ISSUE
Create the applicable CPR passport
The responsible economic operator issues the distinct, validated passport against the applicable product rules and profile.
